In the past, man did not have to think about the protection of his environment. There were few people on the earth ,and natural resources seemed to be unlimited. Today, things are different. The world has become too crowded. We are using up our natural resources too quickly, and at the same time we are polluting our environment with dangerous chemicals. If we humans continue to do this, lives on the earth will not survive.
Everyone realizes today that if too many fish are taken from the sea, there will soon be none left. The need for wildlife protection is greater now than ever before. About 1,000 species of animals are in danger of extinction. With animals, the rate of extinction is now about one species every year. But from 1 A.D. to 1800 A.D., the rate was about one species every five years. Men everywhere are trying to solve the problem on how to protect wildlife while caring for the world’s growing population.
We realize that if rives are polluted by waste produces from factories, we will die. However, in most countries waste products are still put into rivers or into the sea, and there are few laws to stop this. We know too that if the population of the world countries is to rise at the present rate. In a few years, there will not be enough food.
It is very important to deal with the rubbish in cities.
Rubbish must be treated properly. Otherwise it may cause troubles. It may pollute the air and water. If people breathe the polluted air or drink the polluted water, they may fall ill.
Our city has begun to pay attention to the pollution problem. For example, rubbish is sorted. Some, such as newspapers and glass, is recycled. The rest which is believed to be harmful, is sent to a cortain place and buried. Laws have been passed to protect the environment, so waste water should be and is treated before it is poured into rivers.
If we eat more regetables and less meat, there will be more food available for everyone. Land that is used to grow crops feeds fives times more people than land where animals are kept.
Our natural resources will last longer if we learn to recycle them. The world population will not rise so quickly if people use modern methods of birth control.
We’re been trying, but there is still a long way to go. We should do our best to fight against pollution. If we educate people to think about the problems, we shall have a better and cleaner planet in the future.
